Hiking
Take a hike through the park on one of the several scenic paths through the Ozark hills, to really enjoy the beautiful surroundings and view the wildlife. The park offers naturalist-guided hikes (offered March-October), otherwise there are several trails for you to explore on your own.
The Pine Ridge Trail is a relatively challenging 1 1/2 mile hike, through the Upland Forest Natural Area. The natural area is made up of approximately 40 acres of dry upland oak and pine forest. In 1979, this was designated as a premier example of one of Missouri’s special native ecosystems.
A very popular and easy trail is the Montauk Lake loop trail at 8/10 of a mile. This is a flat, gravel road, excellent for children, strollers, and bicycles. You’ll see a wonderful variety of wildlife on this hike including wading birds, wood ducks, water turtles, frogs and beaver in the active beaver lodge.
Picnicking
Montauk State Park has two picnic shelters perfect for large family gatherings or special occasions. Both shelters have picnic tables and outdoor grills. One shelter is equipped with electricity and is handicapped accessible including restrooms and can accommodate up to 70 guests. The other shelter can accommodate up to 30 guests. There is also a variety of picnic sites and playgrounds for the kids.
Reservations are accepted for a nominal fee by contacting the park office at 573-548-2201, otherwise, the shelters are available at no charge on a first-come-first-served basis. A children’s playground and restrooms are also located nearby.
